Bourbon is one of the most celebrated Arabica coffee varieties, known for its sweet, balanced flavor and historical significance. Originating from the island of Bourbon (modern-day Réunion), this variety has been cultivated across Latin America and Africa for centuries. It produces a cup that is typically rich and smooth, with notes of chocolate, red fruit, and subtle citrus, making it a favorite among specialty coffee producers and roasters.
Luis Sagché grows a pure Bourbon microlot on his family’s farm, Finca El Destello, located in the highlands of San Miguel Dueñas in the Antigua region. The farm sits at elevations between 1,700 and 1,800 meters above sea level, where cool nights and volcanic soil create ideal growing conditions. Intercropped with avocado trees for natural shade, the Bourbon cherries mature slowly, developing deep sweetness and complexity.
